Haiti has some of the loveliest unspoiled beaches, particularly on La Tortue (aka Tortuga Island), an island six miles off the north coast, which was at one time riddled with pirates. At the west end is Pointe Saline, a broad, 1.5-mile spread of creamy sand against a brilliantly aquamarine sea. A village of thatched huts is inhabited only by fishermen.
